7 Days of Hope – Day 4

by Dr Veerle Van Tricht MD

Hello,

My topic today is how to avoid burnout in frontline workers who are putting their lives at risk every day during this pandemic. Frontline workers work 12 hour shifts every day and the protective equipment is very hot and uncomfortable to wear. It is a very difficult way of working and very stressful, particularly if they are losing colleagues, family members, friends and patients to the pandemic.

It is also a hard time because of –

  • Stress
  • Isolation
  • Lack of sleep
  • Not eating well

This can all lead to burnout which we do not want to happen because frontline workers are super important.

There are 4 reasons main I don’t want frontline workers to get burnout:

  1. We do not want you to become ill and mentally exhausted through burnout as we need as many people as possible to continue working in the hospitals and care homes.
  2. You are all important and can make a difference in the world, whether it is through your work, your family or friends, you make a difference to somebody.
  3. You could make medical mistakes which causes guilt and it can be hard to forgive yourself
  4. Before the pandemic, 50% of doctors said they were suffering from burnout and 25% had depression with around 1% saying they had considered suicide.

When you are stressed and exhausted you have a higher risk of becoming ill yourself. I am in the UK and the sun is shining and what I want you to do is to get outside whenever you can for some fresh air and vitamin D and boost your immune system.

I have had burnout twice, although I am a doctor. The first time I was a medical student and the second time was when I had my first baby and at the top of my career. I want to help people avoid burnout because it is ruined my life. I saw doctor after doctor and no-one knew what was wrong with me. I lost my career, my income, my house and it took me years to come back to where I should have been. I could not find anyone to help me and had to figure it out for myself.

However, I got better and came back and published two books – one which became a best seller it’s called ‘Success Starts Today’ and so there is hope that this situation will not last for ever. I want to help you to get through this in one piece and to know that better times are coming.

I have an online programme that I will give to you – just let me know what you need help with and I will give you the module that will help you the most. The programme has educational videos, a workbook and guided meditations. Please reach out to me as I want to help as many people as possible so that they don’t go through all the misery I went through.

In my blogs and YouTube videos I explain how to recognise burnout so do checkout my website and YouTube channel.

Much Love,

Stay Healthy, Dr Veerle Van Tricht
