7 Days of Hope – Day 7

Today, I want to tell you how to boost your immune system.
When everyone around me gets the flu or a cold, I don’t usually get it. The supplements I take every day are 1000 mg of Vitamin C but as I have been exposed to the virus in the hospital where I work, I am taking 3000 mg a day. In China and around the world, patients being treated for Coronavirus receive vitamin C because it really helps your immune system fight viruses and bacteria.
Vitamin D is also a good supplement if you live somewhere where there is not much sunlight or during the winter.
Zinc is important for your immune system.
Eat citrus fruits, other fresh fruits and plenty of vegetables. I also take cumin, onion and garlic every day. I cook with garlic as I love the taste and it is anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial.
Think about your microbiome which is the basis of a good immune system and so you need to make sure that your gut is healthy.
Don’t forget to sleep well too. The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is a good example of what happens when you don’t have enough sleep. He is active, fit and eats well and very healthy but he contracted Coronavirus because he was not having enough sleep, was very stressed and was probably not eating as well as he would normally have done and was seriously ill with the virus and in intensive care. All the frontline workers are stressed and some of you at home too. I want you to look after yourselves as the world needs you. Everybody matters and everybody is important.
I want you to now think about who you would like to be in the New World when we get out of lockdown. Are you going to maintain your fitness level now you have been able to go on a run, walk or cycle daily? Are you going to continue to cook healthily once the restaurants reopen? Have you decided you want to change career or just step out of it and do something completely different? There a lots of options for you to think about before we are allowed to return to a more normal way of life. Although I don’t think it was normal before so what is the new normal?
I hope that some of the positive changes which have taken place such as people working from home, kids studying from home which all led to less traffic and less pollution. A lot of work can be done from home with the internet and parents have been able to spend more time with their kids while the schools are closed. So I hope that we can maintain some of these positive changes. It has been lovely to hear the birds and have clean skies and I hope we can maintain that somehow.
I think we will be better prepared in the future for a pandemic but it is going to be a while before we have a vaccination for Coronavirus. So we need to think about how we can keep people alive in the meantime as it is not going to miraculously disappear.
