Why it is Essential that YOU Recognise Burnout Early

Burnout can destroy your career, your relationship, your wealth, your health and ultimately your life! Learn how to recognise it early in yourself, your family, friends or colleagues to help them to get out of this negative spiral.

You may have suffered with burnout in the past and don’t want to repeat it or perhaps have a partner, a child or a work colleague who you notice is stressed and unhappy. It is important that you recognise burnout as the medical profession does not consider it to be an illness (yet). I know as I have worked in the medical profession for 23 years and experienced burnout twice. I got myself out of burnout and now want to share with you what I have learnt from my experiences. If you are a life coach, you will get clients who have burnout and it is good to be able to recognise it and to know the 5 main problems needed to be fixed. People who have burnout will have a foggy brain and not be able to see the issues themselves.

I have coached a lot of people who have burnout – a lot of them are professionals with children and have a problem balancing all their different roles. They want to be the super-mum or super-dad and the super- professional. I wanted to be the super – mum, the super-professional, the sexy wife and keep a perfect home. It can all become too much and I can help you to learn how to balance your life. People who have burnout need to realise that they must learn to look after themselves because if they do not, they are unable to work and look after others. This can also lead to depression and even thoughts of suicide, men in particular are likely to go this far when suffering with burnout.

The 5 main symptoms of burnout:

  1.  Exhaustion – we need to work on how to improve energy levels and this can be done in many ways.
  2. Money worries – people with burnout tend to dislike their job and want to leave but worry that they will be unable to provide for their family and afford to have the perfect home.
  3. No time to recharge – if you constantly give yourself to your profession, your children, your partner, it is easy to forget to give yourself some ‘me time’ to recharge your batteries. It is not selfish to take some time out for yourself – in fact it is essential. Set aside some ‘me time’ in your diary to do what you want to do – make this a priority.
  4. Personal relationships suffer – burnout will affect relationships, having no energy can lead to constant bickering and in doing this you lose your support system. When juggling all your different roles, you need a partner who will support and understand you, you need to reconnect with your partner from the heart so that they are there to support you.
  5. Loss of passion for your profession due to exhaustion. You don’t like going to work it depresses you. If you really dislike your job, think back to what you wanted to be as a child, is that passion still there? Or is it that the career you are in is the one you have always wanted but have forgotten what it means to you? Work out how to fire up that passion again, how to get back the love you had for your job. Once you can do this, you will start to feel better.
