Dr V’s 3 Steps to a Healthy Gut

by Dr Veerle Van Tricht MD

The Importance of Gut Health.
The gut plays a vital role in your overall health and well-being. It can help control everything from your weight to your mood to brain health, inflammation and immune function. Not only that, but 90% of serotonin, the happy feel good hormone, is produced in the gut.

The World within Your Gut in Numbers

  • 90% of the cells in your body are not human
  • There are 150 bacterial genes for each human genes
  • 10,000 species of bacteria have been identified

What is the microbiome?
The microbiome is the collection of all the microbes – bacteria, fungi, protozoa and viruses – that live on and inside the human body.

The Microbiome

  • Digests your food
  • Governs your appetite
  • Controls your metabolism
  • Orchestrates 75% of your immune system
  • Influences your mood – produces 95% serotonin
  • Helps determine how your genes are expressed
  • Produces B vitamins (needed for neurological functions including a good mood) and vitamin K (essential for blood clotting). If you bruise easily, you might be lacking Vitamin K. This can be supplemented orally. You can get it at your local health shop. I get my Liposomal Spray from Holland and Barrett https://www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/vitamins-supplements/ and lo and behold I haven’t had a bruise since! (You can also get your personal probiotics there).

What causes an imbalanced microbiome?

  • Stress/Burnout
  • Antibiotics
  • Major illness
  • Toxins

What is a Leaky Gut?
Leaky gut is a digestive condition in which bacteria and toxins are able to “leak” through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream and cause a systemic reaction.

The Leaky Gut Sequence:
Partially digested food and bacteria seep through the gut lining into the bloodstream.
Your immune system reacts to “the invaders” with an inflammatory reaction.
Inflammation is one of the causes of excessive abdominal fat which in turn puts pressure on the kidneys. This leads to high blood pressure amongst other problems.
In the case of Immune diseases like non-infective uveitis.
Allergies
Food craving for the allergen
Yeast overgrowth

What causes a Leaky Gut?

  • Stress
  • An imbalanced microbiome
  • Eating ‘fast food’
  • Unhealthy fats (i.e. fast/junk food)

3 Steps to a Healthy Gut

 Step 1:
Remove stress, Toxins and Allergens:
A good Water filtration system – removes heavy metals, pesticides, chlorine and fluoride but what about the oestrogens?
Have the amalgam fillings removed from your teeth by a specialised dentist who uses a mouth guard to stop the toxins from touching your mouth’s mucosa during the procedure.
Avoid – Dairy, Transfats ( fast food) wheat and alcohol. An exemption for red wine is disputable. It contains resveratrol which is a helpful anti-oxidant. Look for organic wine growers that don’t add sulphites nor other chemicals. In general your healthy microbiome doesn’t like alcohol.

Step 2:
Repair the gut lining by eating:
Probiotics: get them at the local health shop: look for diversity and numbers.
The more varieties of good bacteria, the better.
Look for the highest count of bacteria.
Do they have to be kept in the fridge?
Do they survive your gastric acids on the way to the gut?
Oligosaccharides – found in onions, leeks, garlic, apple, asparagus, artichoke and fresh orange juice.
Bone broth
Fermented food like sauerkraut, pickled onions etc.

Step 3:
Relieve the Stress on your Intestinal Tract
A brief grateful blessing before each meal for all the people, animals and plants involved in getting life enhancing nutritional food on your plate.
Focused slow eating: chewing your food helps break down the food not only physically but chemically through exposure to Amylase, an important digestive enzyme in your saliva.
Sensuous eating – Don’t just gobble down food without appreciating what it looks like, smells and tastes like. The Sanskrit sutra says: ‘When eating or drinking, become the taste of the food or drink, and be filled’
